New Leaders Council

NLC Institute

NLC Institute

The New Leaders Council Institute is the premier leadership and professional development, training, mentoring, networking, and career and political advancement program for young professionals.

An intense, six-month progressive entrepreneurship training program, NLC-LA Institute is highly-selective, admitting only 20 fellows to each program. The ideal NLC Fellow has the following characteristics, best explored in the application and interview stage:

  • Commitment to progressive values
  • Emerging and/or accomplished in their career; generally between ages of 25 and 40
  • Ability to benefit from NLC personally and professionally
  • Commitment to the local community and to building the NLC presence long term
  • Constructive team orientation and positive character (fun!)
  • High leadership potential, as evidenced by outsized early success
  • Contributes diverse and unique perspectives to the class
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ambition to lead

Furthermore, collectively, the ideal NLC Fellows class has the following characteristics, which should be confirmed in the various stages of the application/interview experience:

  • Individual Fellows meet the above criteria
  • Diverse in the broadest sense of the term
  • Brings new assets, skills, and networks to NLC
  • Intention to build and grow with NLC individually and collectively

Each of our 50 NLC chapters across the nation holds an NLC Institute each year, engaging local leaders to conduct sessions to create a uniquely tailored experience where fellows learn from guest speakers at the top of their field.

Applications to become an NLC Fellow and participate in an NLC Institute in Los Angeles are open now. Each Institute begins the following January. Full schedule available here.

David Kietzman "The NLC experience has helped foster my entrepreneurial drive and reignited my passion for community service and leadership. Through the trainings, mentoring and mixers I found a new progressive family that has helped encourage and challenge me in my career."

~David Kietzman, Los Angeles Fellow (2011)

Our Challenge

To recruit, train, promote and create a network of Progressive leaders in a way parallel to what Conservatives have been doing for the last generation through The Leadership Institute…
Conservatives
  • Since 1979, The Leadership Institute has trained more than 101,062 conservatives to succeed in government, politics, and the media, and launched many careers in politics.
  • As of 2010, the Leadership Institute had an operating budget of $12.5 Million, allowing them to produce a number of young, like-minded individuals that work in the various aspects of the political environment.

Progressives
  • Including Spring 2018 graduates, New Leaders Council has trained over 5,000 new leaders since 2006.
  • NLC has Institutes in 50 regions, including recently added chapters in Texas, Florida, New York, and Oregon.
  • Since 2011, we have been setting records for fundraising, receiving over $750,000 in donations, and for recruit nominations, receiving over 8,000. In 2018, we took in almost $2,000,000 to fund trainings led by existing and new chapters.

If you--or someone you know--are a progressive leader, we would love to have you join the NLC LA family.Screen_Shot_2014-07-11_at_11.31.10_AM.png
